The death of Robin remains a horrifying moment in comic book history, but it's just a moment。 The Death in the Family story arc itself is dumb shlock: tacky (Robin's fate was left to a reader phone-in vote), laughably contrived (the Joker becomes Iran's ambassador to the UN) and dependent on ridiculous coincidences (Joker just so happens to be at 3 exact locations across the globe when Robin is), though the last minute tonal insanity of the Joker becoming the Iranian ambassador is amusing。 It is The death of Robin remains a horrifying moment in comic book history, but it's just a moment。 The Death in the Family story arc itself is dumb shlock: tacky (Robin's fate was left to a reader phone-in vote), laughably contrived (the Joker becomes Iran's ambassador to the UN) and dependent on ridiculous coincidences (Joker just so happens to be at 3 exact locations across the globe when Robin is), though the last minute tonal insanity of the Joker becoming the Iranian ambassador is amusing。 It isn't boring, but I couldn't in good conscience call this good storytelling。 It doesn't belong on so many "best comic books" lists。 。。。more
Maxi Parada,

There are sort of some spoilers but I'm not marking them because what I'm "spoiling" you can plainly see from the title of the comic and the cover。There are a lot of things in this comic that don't make a lot of sense (yes, I know I'm saying that about a comic book but honestly the thing with the Joker toward the end。。。 What?)。 However, I'm rating it pretty high because I have such an attachment to Jason Todd。 He's my favorite Robin and I sobbed like a baby reading his death scene。 What the hell There are sort of some spoilers but I'm not marking them because what I'm "spoiling" you can plainly see from the title of the comic and the cover。There are a lot of things in this comic that don't make a lot of sense (yes, I know I'm saying that about a comic book but honestly the thing with the Joker toward the end。。。 What?)。 However, I'm rating it pretty high because I have such an attachment to Jason Todd。 He's my favorite Robin and I sobbed like a baby reading his death scene。 What the hell was going on with people in the 80s that they really just wanted to see a 14-year-old boy murdered? Y'all had some issues。 Also knowing all that I know about the character, and actually knowing almost the entire storyline going in did not stop the tears so I'd say if you're at all impacted by fictional character death, grab some tissues before you pick this one up。 It's a wild, heartbreaking ride。 。。。more

A great telling of a tragic tale。 Full of excitement, mystery, and action。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 A Death in the Family, one of my personal favourite sad moments of this family。 It destroys me every time I read it, I just can't bear with Jason's death scene and then the anger that Batman holds towards the Jokers but still, he didn't kill him, it makes me angry, but we all know Batman's motto。 A Death in the Family, one of my personal favourite sad moments of this family。 It destroys me every time I read it, I just can't bear with Jason's death scene and then the anger that Batman holds towards the Jokers but still, he didn't kill him, it makes me angry, but we all know Batman's motto。 。。。more

In 1988 a truly interesting thing happened。 For the 50th Anniversary of Batman comics, D。C。 decided to do something shocking- allow the readers to vote on whether to save or kill Robin (Jason Todd)。 Jason, who wasn't terribly popular, was voted to be killed off。 Bear in mind this is during a time when death was supposed to mean something, unlike nowadays when characters seem to die on a daily basis, only to return within an issue or two。The story behind Robin's death is the now-famous "A Death i In 1988 a truly interesting thing happened。 For the 50th Anniversary of Batman comics, D。C。 decided to do something shocking- allow the readers to vote on whether to save or kill Robin (Jason Todd)。 Jason, who wasn't terribly popular, was voted to be killed off。 Bear in mind this is during a time when death was supposed to mean something, unlike nowadays when characters seem to die on a daily basis, only to return within an issue or two。The story behind Robin's death is the now-famous "A Death in the Family"。 Jason Todd, basically, acts the fool and has a temper tantrum because his mother doesn't love him。 So he's off to find the mother who tossed him away。 His search leads him to three women that could be potential mommy figures。 Along the way, he runs into the Joker and it doesn't end well。 This story has aged well (even considering we know that Robin didn't really die) and so has the art。 While not brilliant, this is a pretty good story。My volume also has the 5-part follow up called "A Lonely Place of Dying"。 This is the story of how Tim Drake finds out the identity of Bruce and Dick and weasels his way into becoming the new Robin。 This story, which has a subplot of Batman taking on Two-Face, was actually good。 At least the parts with Batman and Two-Face trying to outhtink each other-the study in contrast and similarities was well done。 Another story that has aged well along with the art。A cool volume collecting two famous Batman stories, all packaged in a nice HC edition。 A great addition to my collection。 。。。more

Doctor Alpha,
Jim Starlin and Batman are a combination that should have NEVER take place in the first place, unless it was something in vein of later Golden/Silver Age era sci-fi Batman kind of thing。 This is not the guy who made Captain Marvel and Warlock selling titles after the dreck written by Roy Thomas, this is an employee doing his worst job just because he needed a check to pay the bills。 Avoid safely。
